A Hebrew magazine just printed an excerpted chapter from my book, Israel Behind Bars.
That chapter’s name is Eulogy, and it’s one of my favorites.
Eulogy tells my experience acting as escorting officer for an inmate whose recently deceased father is being buried. My dilemma revolves around the fact that I was expected to deliver the eulogy. Two issues made this a nightmare. One, I’ve always hated giving eulogies. I just never felt comfortable doing them. (I might be the only rabbi who has been known to tell a joke while eulogizing….) My tension was compounded by the fact I knew absolutely nothing about the father, and at the cemetery I learned he himself was an ex-inmate!
For my readers’ convenience and pleasure, I’ve attached to this post both the recent Hebrew translation of that chapter, as well as the original chapter, in English.
Permission is given here to reprint these. I’m also encouraging your forwarding this chapter to your own friends, blogs, networks and family.
Enjoy.
